First Impressions
Appearance
Adrian is 28 years old, 5'7, and has a slim/athletic build. His skin is pitch black at the edges of his extremities and the top of his head, and graduates to the normal brown. One of his eyes is gold, with an enlarged iris and no pupil, and the other is fully black with with visibly dark veins around it. When experiencing extremes of emotion, such as anger or embarrassment, his golden freckles glow noticeably and his halo might become briefly visible.
Fashion
Adrian is always fully covered from the neck down, including gloves, regardless of the weather. He favours cloaks, suits, and high collars if he can find them but will prioritize wearing anything that covers the maximum amount of skin and allows him to hide his face in shadow. Usually very neatly kept to the point of being a bit fussy. If he has the option, he will choose clothing that's loose-fitting but tailored and well-made. He's the sort of person who'll wear a plain button-up top that costs like $500 (stupid) (his ass does NOT have $500 here).
Demeanor & Attitude
Tends to fade into the background whenever he can and generally doesn't want to be perceived. He's polite and friendly, but distant, and often very guarded about extremes of emotion. When meeting people for the first time, they tend to get his customer service personality, but he warms up very quickly and has a calming and sincere presence. Even so, he always keeps at least a few feet of physical distance between himself and others unless he's examining them.Don't let this fool you. Once he becomes close friends with someone, he will be their primary source of stress as he proceeds to show off his incredibly non-existent self-preservation instincts and probably does dark magic to protect them whether they want that or not.
Voice
He sounds High Fantasy British I'm sorry but not that sorry. His natural speaking voice is pretty deep, but he tends to pitch it up and soften it, especially when he's meeting new people, because he doesn't like to be noticed and doesn't want to stand out.Undead creatures & people who can sense evil click here
The ground around him (within 5ft) is desecrated ground. There's no visible indicator of this, it's just vibes. It's entirely up to you if this leaves any discernible impression at all for your character. Undead creatures might feel more invigorated on desecrated ground, or simply feel more at home. Those who can sense evil will sense it from Adrian (because of his warlock pacts, though they might not immediately realize this).

☆ BRACKETS/PROSE: Brackets, but I'll match prose. ☆ OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS & CONTENT WARNINGS: None of this is likely to come up unprompted in a thread but here's a list of content warnings for things that might come up:
General warnings for the Curse of Strahd campaign
Child abuse and neglect, emotional and physical abuse towards vulnerable adults, murder and attempted murder, including that of children, kidnapping, stalking, gaslighting, abuse of power, racism, sexism, cruelty, torture, references to colonialism and genocide, mutilation, mind control, the desecration of the dead and of places of worship, cannibalism, including involuntary cannibalism, mercy killing, situations paralleling sexual assault, parental death, child death, reference to stillbirth/miscarriage, partner death, mental illness and the mistreatment of the mentally ill, maladaptive grieving behaviors, starvation and food horror, cruelty to animals, prolonged and painful deaths, body horror, transformation against ones will, insects and infestation horror, abandonment, including child abandonment, betrayal, including partner and parental betrayal, consumption of alcohol including portrayals of alcoholism, involuntary homicide, graphic depictions of death and violence, implied necrophilia, self harm, suicide and victim blaming. For Adrian specifically, the main ones are: PTSD, survivors' guilt, body horror, reckless self-endangerment, occasional passive suicidal ideation, thoughts/mentions of cannibalism.
Please feel free to let me know if you find anything uncomfortable in a thread or want me to avoid any of these subjects!
Otherwise, I have one request: Adrian can be immature sometimes, but unless your character is just Like That with everyone under 30 (I totally get it, I have also played people who are like that), please don't icly refer to him as 'kid' or 'boy' - he's 28! He might look a bit younger but he's very clearly An Adult. Otherwise, if you're unsure about approaching a subject just send me a message!
☆ BACKTAGGING: Yes please! I'm kind of a slow tagger.
☆ THREADHOPPING: Yup, that's fine.
☆ FOURTHWALLING: If people want to mention that d&d exists in their worlds and recognize the names of monsters/classes/etc that's totally fine — the multiverse is a big, weird place! However, please refrain from going into details about the contents of the Curse of Strahd module (though mentioning Strahd himself as an entity that exists in d&d is fine). Basically, you can do as much as you want with 'a fictionalized version of your world exists in mine' but try not to go so far as 'you, specifically, are a fictional character.'
☆ NOT INTERESTED IN: Nothing I can think of at the moment!

☆ PHYSICAL INFORMATION: Adrian's right eye is fully black with some dark/visible veins around the socket. Left eye has a large gold iris with no visible pupil. He has a ton of little golden freckles all over his body, concentrated on the bridge of his nose. When he's feeling particularly strong emotions, they may start glowing, and extremes of emotion may cause his halo to become visible briefly.☆ PHYSICAL TOUCH: You can and should! OOC I'm not opposed to this. Adrian will immediately flinch away if he's not friendly/familiar with them though he won't take offense if it's obviously well-meaning.
He go out of his way to avoid any attempted skin-to-skin contact since it's likely to inflict a magical poison that he has no control over. (His touch acts as a contagion spell.) How your character might be effected by this, if at all, is entirely up to you, and can change with every touch!
☆ PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: Yup, that's fine! He's fresh from vampire land so he's pretty accustomed to it.
☆ PSYCHICS/PSYCHIC ABILITIES: Consider this blanket permission to just go for it. He has no particular defenses, so it's fine to read his mind, though he probably won't be thrilled about it if he finds out. If your character can manipulate emotions or control other characters, just let me know what the effect is in your prose and I'll likely just roll with it, or DM you if we need to sort something out! I'm trusting people to be chill and reasonable.
☆ RELATIONSHIPS: LAUGHS... Adrian has not dated anyone or even seriously thought about it but I think it would be fun for him to stumble into something! He's a noble so for most of his life he sort of expected to be married for political reasons, if that, but not much else.
☆ MAGICAL INFORMATION: As a warlock, he's bonded to otherworldly entities who provide him with the bulk of his magical abilities. If that's something you want your character to sense in some way, go for it! These entities are specifically an angel (his primary/original warlock patron), a vampire (Strahd commandeered his patron pact against his will when he entered Barovia), and a death god (choices were made).
☆ OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS & TRIGGERS: This isn't really a thing anymore but he used to try to keep his aasimar heritage under wraps partly because aasimar, as Champions of Good and all that, are like Tasty Treat #1 to demons and the like... but for Adrain it's mostly because he has a lot of issues around failing to live up to his 'blessing'. While he doesn't necessarily mind talking about it at this point, he still retains a lot of old ingrained habits around trying to hide it and tends to be a little bitter/self-deprecating about it.

Adrian is aasimar; though he has human parents, he's not human, but closer to an angel-type being or nephilim — though nowhere near that powerful. (I'm not saying someone in his family line rawed an angel but. That is probably what happened.)
He can still mostly pass as human to casual inspection, save for his eyes and the dusting of golden freckles. He tends to keep himself pretty carefully guarded because his heritage becomes much more obvious when he loses control of his emotions. His freckles glow brightly when he's angry or embarrassed, and if he's particularly agitated the ghostly outline of his halo and/or wings might also become visible. Various traits will also appear briefly when he's using specific spells, but otherwise he looks the way he does in the portrait above.
I tossed up some visual reference to his familiars (the raven and the little leggy eyeball) as well as his Book of Shadows, which is inked into his skin.

SPELLS;
As a level 10 Pact of Tome warlock, Adrian has access to most spell lists as well as any d&d 5e spells ONLY IF they can be cast as a ritual. In order to obtain new spells, he must first find a scroll or spellbook, then spend 2 hours transcribing it onto his skin using rare and expensive inks. If the markings are damaged in any way (such as an injury) he can't cast any effected spells until the markings are restored through a 1 hour ritual.Adrian can cast any spell marked cantrip or ritual at will, so long as he has the (uninterrupted) time required by the ritual and any material components. Additionally, he can cast 2 spells of any level before he must rest for 1 hour in order to restore his magical abilities (spell slots). In dire circumstances, or when he believes he'll need to call on more of his abilities, he can preform a ritual and consume the heart of a sufficiently powerful creature (so at least as strong as a human) in order to gain additional spell slots (one for each heart consumed) that will last until his next long rest. He can only typically do this once or twice because there's only so much raw gore a guy can eat.
Lastly, all spells have a specific range (within line of sight), duration (typically 1 minute), and might require Verbal, Somatic (gesture), and/or Material components. (Material components are usually circumvented by a spell focus, but I will not be bringing his spell focus to Diadem.) If he's unable to provide any of the components a given spell might require (such as having his hands tied or being unable to speak), he's unable to cast it.
OTHER ABILITIES;
Healing Light - This healing ability is a part of his pact bond with Raphael and is the only healing ability he has that does not carry the risk of causing harm instead. While it is potent, he can only use so much of it in a day, and when he's used all of it he has to rest 8 hours before it can be used again.Tomb of Levistus - As a reaction when he takes damage, he can wrap himself in Raphael's wings for 6 seconds. He gains 10 temporary hit points per warlock level (so 100, which is a pretty hefty blow in non-d&d terms), which take as much of the triggering damage as possible. Immediately after he takes the damage, he gains vulnerability to fire damage, he can't move from the spot, and is incapacitated while wrapped in the wings. These effects, including any remaining temporary hit points, end after 6 seconds. This invocation can't be used again until he rests for at least 1 hour.
On the non-magical side of things, Adrian is actually trained in non-magical medicine, and it's primarily what he practiced before he took his first pact. His expertise is broad but somewhat shallow — he can dress a wound with whatever items he finds on-hand in the moment, or amputate a limb, but wouldn't be able to preform heart surgery or anything very specialized/advanced beyond what an ordinary field medic might do.
In addition, he's resistant to necrotic, poison, and radiant damage (it still hurts him but less bad) and can speak common and celestial. He also has darkvision, meaning that he can see in shades of gray in the darkness.
Lastly, Adrian can magical girl transform into an angel with wings and the ability to fly for exactly 1 minute. This buffs his attacks, but doesn't do a whole lot otherwise. Since he can only use it once per day, I'm guessing his 1 minute of flight is probably fine for diadem?
DRAWBACKS;
In terms of magic, Adrian's abilities have some significant drawbacks. Upon entering Barovia, unbeknownst to Adrian, Strahd took control of his warlock pact with the angel Raphael. Because of this, Adrian has been unable to contact his true patron, and his magic began causing him pain every time he used it. It will likely continue to do so until Strahd is killed. His right eye is the Eye of Dendallen — a curse in the form of an eye. Adrian fell under its spell and gouged out his own eyeball against his will, allowing this eye to replace it. Adrian can and does command the eye now, so it can crawl out of his head and skitter around and allows him to see through it. He tends to avoid using it unless he has to.
As a part of a deal with some hags to save a group of children, Adrian gave up his speed, which means he often enters combat at a disadvantage and acts last.
Though he would insist otherwise, there was only one pact that Adrian made that was truly of his own free will, and that would be his ill-fated pact with Laneth, a god of the dead. Laneth's boons of insight, necromancy, and additional magical reserves came at a steep cost: Adrian's skin darkened at the extremities and he can no longer touch other creatures (any kind of skin-to-skin contact) without potentially causing them to be poisoned. The ground around him for 5 feet is desecrated ground. At the end of every long rest, there's a chance that using any of his stronger healing magic will result in damage being done instead of healing. Even if he passes the save for that, there's always a 1:10 chance that his healing will do damage regardless (Nat 1/20) unless Cure Wounds is being preformed on himself.
Even the ritual through which he gains further magical ability is a 'boon' from Laneth, requiring that he tear open a creature (living or recently dead) and consume its still warm heart.
Fun fact! Aasimar can actually "fall" if their alignment changes to evil, so he really has to be careful not to do that...

Character Information
Character: Adrian Silverleaf
Canon: OC (D&D)
Age: 28
History: I'm going to do my best to do a really broad summary of events to give enough context for Adrian specifically but I'm sorry if this is kind of long..... General content warning for mentions of child abuse, child death, murder, genocide, body horror, and abusive relationship dynamics (all of these are specific to the Curse of Strahd campaign). Lots of survivors' guilt and unhealthy coping mechanisms in his general backstory. Probably just anything you might expect in a gothic horror/fantasy setting (but surprisingly no incest).
--------
Adrian's childhood and adolescence were overall relatively ordinary for the son of rich nobility in the thriving city-state of Waterdeep. He was raised by a pair of Countesses: Carmilla, his biological mother, and Laura, the woman she married after Adrian's father died. I won't get too into the specifics of the family politics, but suffice to say that the Silverleaf family are properly tolerated, but not particularly well-liked among the nobles of Waterdeep.
His mother Carmilla was the black sheep of the family, having run away from her duties as a young woman in order to seek a life of adventure before returning home. Adrian is, in many ways, his mother's polar opposite. Quiet and bookish, he would have likely been happy to spend his entire life within Waterdeep. There was just one minor detail... Adrian was born aasimar.
Aasimar carry the bloodline of celestial creatures from the upper planes (ie. angels), which is all well and good except that the bloodline comes with certain expectations. Aasimar are expected to serve as champions of the gods, and to dedicate their lives to doing great deeds and fighting evil. From an early age, they receive visions and guidance from their celestial patron via dreams and intuition. Though his parents were delighted, they were also eager to support him in fulfilling his expected role, and he had a lot to prove. In short, Adrian grew up being told that he had to be god's most special little guy... and almost immediately fell short of that expectation. Though he was always willing to help people, he was never much of a fighter, or particularly keen on adventure. Though bright and curious, he wasn't extraordinarily smart, either.
Having grown up with Carmilla's stories of her own adventures, he saw much of the physical and emotional toll they took on her after her "retirement", and how Laura was so adept at easing her pain, as well as his own. Though he had no healing magic at all, he became determined to take that path, and learned much of what he knew from Laura before apprenticing with a doctor in the city. He was in no way remarkable even in this respect, but he could help those who couldn't help themselves, and he had no need of money or promises of worship as another doctor or some clerics might.
All the while, his patron grew more and more restless, sending dreams of righteous violence that Adrian did his best to ignore.
In his early 20s, he finally agreed to leave the city for the first time when his family's duties to the Lords' Alliance required someone from his house to personally mediate a trade dispute in the mountains at the Spine of the World. Adrian travelled with a small party of household guards, expecting little combat, but his arrival could not be more ill-timed.
Little did he know, talks had already fallen through, and a skirmish had broken out between both parties that would not be quelled. It was a small thing at first, but the conflict escalated as the Lords' Alliance sent further reinforcements and the tribes of the North banded together to repel them. Though Adrian tried his best, he eventually came to understand that the noble he was meant to broker peace with had never been interested in any kind of peaceable agreement, and his own presence there was little more than a political formality for the Lords' Alliance. He could have left soon after, but opted to stay and aid with the treatment of injured soldiers. Winter came, sealing off the mountain pass, and that was when things became truly dire.
Adrian was completely unprepared for the realities of a protracted battle, and while the border dispute wasn't grand, it was a drawn-out, brutal, and utterly pointless war of attrition that saw no shortage of needless suffering. He was taken under the wing of Captain Selene Ostren, who did her best to keep him alive and mostly sensible. He lost many of his newly-made friends, and his world devolved down into ice and blood and exhaustion. He had only mundane abilities to rely on, and when he slept he dreamed of his patron's disappointment, and the weight of those who died under his care.
Sometime in the midst of the conflict, Adrian was called to aid Captain Ostren, who had taken a mortal injury from a spellcaster. He knew immediately that it wasn't something he could heal on his own. Out of options, he desperately begged for help to save her life.
Finally, something in his blood sang, and a cold white light filled the medical tent. Though he thought himself numb to emotion, Adrian was suddenly paralyzed with fear knowing he was in the presence of something well beyond his mortal comprehension. It was his patron, Raphael.
Raphael and Adrian struck a deal, then - a life for a life debt. Power, for the promise of wielding it. For the promise of more of it.
Captain Ostren's life was saved with that magic, as were many others, though he couldn't bring back those who had already died (yet).
Eventually, the winter thawed to spring, and after tallying the losses further conflict became too costly for the noble houses to sustain. Adrian went home with the rest, but he couldn't continue living the life he once had. He was full of shame and guilt, and abruptly abandoned by his patron despite their deal. He drifted from place to place, sometimes even finding himself on other battlefields, but never quite feeling at home again.
When the Lords' Alliance made their next request years later, he would hear Raphael's voice again for the first time. He was to aid in closing a portal that allowed a pack of Werewolves to prey upon a nearby town. This was where he would first meet his unexpected travelling companions, and be pulled into the mists of Barovia to face the vampire Strahd.
For over a month, Adrian served as the primary healer for a party of adventurers: Shump; a paladin dedicated to justice, Fern; a rogue assassin, Alden; a sorcerer and fellow Waterdeep noble, and later Taulok; a druid and master of puns.
After arriving in Barovia and getting their bearings, the party was initially tasked with escorting Ireena Kolyana, the daughter of the Burgomaster of Barovia (Barovia is a town as well as the name of the domain), to a town where she might be safe, and where they might find more information about their own quarry. They learned that her household in Barovia had been beset by Strahd and his minions night after night, which had indirectly caused the death of her father. Strahd believed that Ireena might be the reincarnation of his lost love, and was obsessed with her.
The mission to escort Ireena failed days into the journey when the party was set upon by vampire spawn and had a total party wipe. Ireena was taken to Strahd's castle, only for the party to find out later that she had bargained for their lives in exchange for her accepting Strahd's marriage proposal.
After that, it became their mission to rescue Ireena and defeat Strahd, after which they could try to find a way to return home and seal the portal between worlds. They were, however, not nearly strong enough.
Guided by fortunes revealed to them through tarokka cards (tarot cards), as well as stories of Barovia's past unearthed through exploration, the party hunted down various weapons, such as the Sun Sword, and powerful relics that would help them defeat Strahd and restore Barovia to the land it once was. The nearby town of Vallaki became something of a home base for them, having befriended the innkeepers at the Blue Water Inn. However, unrest continued to rise in the city, ranging from rampaging vampire spawn to an eventual fire that burned nearly half the city to the ground, to The Lady Watcher and her cult wresting control of the city from the Burgomaster.
The journey through Barovia was a difficult one, marked by tragedies great and small. A priest kept his son starving in a basement because the man has been turned into vampire spawn, and the party was forced to decide if there's mercy in killing the boy. Adrian helped a midwife safely deliver a child, only to find the child was silent and passive at birth, born without a soul. A starving city payed a tithe to an angelic Abbot who used his wealth to breed people and animals for foul experimentation, all in order to craft the perfect bride for Strahd. Adrian was forced to confront the idea that even a creature like his patron could be corrupted... And must be killed.
They learned, too, the fate of those who dared to defy Strahd: an elven man killed his sister in a desperate bid to free her from becoming Strahd's eternal thrall, and in return Strahd killed every last woman of his species, and left the men to die a slow death after being mutilated. It was a story repeated in other places across the land.
Even the werewolves they had come to hunt were, in the end, victims of Strahd's evil. Those who supported Strahd were aided by him in order to take control of the werewolf pack, their leaders forcing them to kidnap children to keep the pack from dying out. Though the party was able to intervene and support their werewolf friend Emil in getting far enough to challenge the leader and reclaim the pack, the pack couldn't be the same after what was done and would continue to be hunted. Fern was invited to stay with them and be among people who were very much like the ones she had lost, but declined in order to stay with the party and face Strahd together. Adrian was deeply moved by her loyalty and selflessness and even more determined to ensure that it wouldn't all be in vain.
All of the evils they experienced in Barovia, and the bitterness they found even in success, it all tied back, in some way or another, to Strahd and his foul influence.
Though previously disinclined towards killing, Adrian began to accept the idea in general, and became convinced that there was no other way to deal with Strahd. He was equally convinced that the party simply didn't have the power to do that, and that they might die before ever reaching that point. Because of this, he became more and more reckless and obsessive in his pursuit of power, desperate to protect the friends who had become like family to him.
Through all this, Strahd taunted the party and... courted Adrian, sometimes even offering him gifts. He'd cut off Adrian's communication with his patron, but he offered to take Raphael's place and become Adrian's patron instead, promising to answer his prayers and give him what he needed to unlock his true potential. He saw Adrian's hunger for power and recognized himself in it. Adrian came very close to accepting Strahd's offer (in the hopes that he might turn that potential against Strahd in the end) but refused him eventually.
That desire for power still remained, however. When the party visited the Amber Temple, they found Barovia's old gods entombed there. To touch their coffins would be to make a pact with them, and despite the pleading of his friends and several attempts to restrain him, Adrian managed to do exactly that. Laneth gifted him with some of her power in his quest against Strahd. Because of her "gift", he could no longer touch people without making them deathly ill, but he could rip out their hearts and gain an extra spell slot so... checkmate, atheists? The rest of the party was NOT thrilled about this for some reason, though at least Adrian wasn't the only one who did it. Taulok also touched a coffin and gained the power of an ancient druid and that was about when they became Adrian's favourite party member.
All of these gothic fantasy horror shenanigans culminated in Strahd's wedding with Ireena. After receiving an invitation written by Ireena herself — a last attempt at seeking the party's aid in freeing her from her coming fate — the party reconnected with allies they had made on the journey and finally made their way to Strahd's castle to face him.
Since we're still playing out the end of this campaign, I'll be taking Adrian from just before he enters the castle grounds.
Possessions: He's possessed by like 3 guys I'm sorry I didn't plan this—
Anyway I'm cutting out his spell focus, which allows him to mostly ignore material components in his spells, because I want him to work a bit for spellcraft materials. Aside from that, his other nonmagical items are:
- Travelling Cloak & an adventurer's pack with all the standard accoutrements (rope, a few days of rations, torches, a bedroll, etc)
- A handful of gold and silver coins
- A few books (non-magical, including Snow Dwarf and the Seven Whytes)
- 1 pot of rare ink + pen, which can be used to inscribe ritual spells on his skin (but is just ordinary ink if he doesn't find any ritual spells)
- Does his eye count as an item..? It's technically a cursed item that's bonded to him. It usually stays in his eye socket.
Weapon: N/A - he has magic
Powers/Abilities: I'm sorry, but I'm putting in the coded power section to (hopefully?) make it easy to read. I will be rolling checks for any spells that normally require it in D&D just for fun and just handwaving him whiffing the spells or having them not work if I run into situations where they might conflict with an event or, you know, for the bit.
I had a couple of questions/notes to ask about:
Flying - Adrian can magical girl transform into an angel and fly for exactly 1 minute per day. Is that something you want me to nerf in any way (outside of the aforementioned 'doesn't work if conflicting with an event') or is that kind of fine since it has a hard limit anyway?
Speak with Dead / Animate Dead - tl;dr Adrian can ask dead people questions and also raise humanoid skeletons or a corpses as undead servants if he chooses. He typically avoids using these because he thinks it's deeply disrespectful to the dead, but he will still turn to them in dire situations, and usually bury the corpse as soon as it's no longer needed for a specific task. I know there aren't any specific rules against this, but even so it's kinda weird so I just want to double check if I should nerf this in any way or if it's fine as-is!
Otherwise, I think everything is detailed in the power section below.
He tends to keep himself somewhat guarded because his heritage becomes much more obvious when he loses control of his emotions. His freckles glow brightly when he's angry or embarrassed, and if he's particularly agitated the ghostly outline of his halo and/or wings might also become visible. Various traits will also appear briefly when he's using specific spells.
The area around him for 5 feet is desecrated ground (see the 'other' section below). Adrian can't touch people (skin-to-skin contact) without potentially poisoning them and will go out of his way to avoid physical contact because of that.

SPELLS;
If the markings are damaged in any way (such as an injury) he can't cast any affected spells until the markings are restored through a 1 hour ritual.Adrian can cast any spell marked cantrip or ritual at will, so long as he has the (uninterrupted) time required by the ritual and any material components. In dire circumstances, or when he believes he'll need to call on more of his abilities, he can perform a ritual and consume the heart of a sufficiently powerful creature (so at least as strong as a human) in order to gain additional spell slots (one for each heart consumed) that will last until his next long rest.
OTHER ABILITIES;
Healing Light - This healing ability is a part of his pact bond with Raphael and is the only healing ability he has that does not carry the risk of causing harm instead. While it is potent, he can only use so much of it in a day, and when he's used all of it he has to rest 8 hours before it can be used again.
Additionally, Adrian will sometimes treat very minor wounds over a long period of time (roughly 1 hour of rest) or stabilize an unconscious person to prevent them from dying outright if there's a risk of that. Although I flavour it as magical, these are mundane skills in d&d and can be performed by anyone. It's the same idea and efficacy as doing CPR if someone is unconscious, or resting to recover from exhaustion.
Tomb of Levistus - As a reaction when he takes damage, he can wrap himself in Raphael's wings for 6 seconds.

His expertise is broad but somewhat shallow — he can dress a wound with whatever items he finds on-hand in the moment, or amputate a limb, but wouldn't be able to perform heart surgery or anything very specialized/advanced beyond what an ordinary field medic might do.
DRAWBACKS;
At the end of every long rest, there's a chance that using Cure Wounds will result in damage being done instead of healing. Even if he passes the save for that, there's always a 1:10 chance that his healing will do damage regardless (Nat 1/20) unless Cure Wounds is being performed on himself.
Application Questions
Who is the most important person in their life and why? What might be different if this person hadn't been around?
Though I think his mothers both influenced him heavily in different ways, it's probably Laura. Adrian had a pretty specific path that he was expected to go down, and she was one of the only people who supported him in pursing his own goals and interests, even if they weren't in any way extraordinary. He has since lost his way, but Laura is still someone he looks up to and takes after. Even his choice to take on his warlock pact ultimately came from a place of love and self-sacrifice, largely because of the values they share.
He'd be too ashamed of his current situation to seek her advice or return any of her letters even if he could, but if she hadn't been around things would have gone very differently for him far earlier in his life. That mix of privilege and insecurity that he was born into could have made him the sort of person who treated the people around him as stepping stones in his path, or closed himself off to protect himself from pain and disappointment. If anything, his problem is that he's over-corrected in the other direction by trying to emulate her, and his compulsion to care for and protect others is the reason for a lot of his Problems.
Is there an event in your character's life that they'd do differently? How so and why?
Probably the whole mediator situation in the mountains. In retrospect, he was hopelessly naive in trusting the Lords' Alliance to have noble goals. He thinks that the whole thing was at least partly his fault because of that. He should have realized sooner that he was a just a decorative chess piece, or attempted to wield his family's influence to put a stop to things before winter came. If pressed, he might acknowledge that it was out of his hands, but even so — it's easier to blame himself than to feel powerless. He just thinks that the real tragedy of that situation is that the suffering was all so petty and needless.
He probably should regret his warlock deals and how they altered the trajectory of his life, but despite the significant cost of the power he's gained, he wouldn't make another choice if he had the option, if only because it would mean allowing people he loved to die or be hurt when he had some other recourse.
What's the greatest challenge you foresee your character facing in the setting?
Not clicking on any 'hot single eldritch horrors in your area want to give you power' ads.
This is only mostly a joke.
He's had it reinforced to him over and over that the only way to stop truly evil people from just doing whatever the hell they want, which is making everyone miserable under their heels, is to be more powerful than them so you can 1. Protect your friends from that fate and 2. Kill The Bastards. What's one more little pact? What's a few more spells? How much worse can he do to himself?
Adrian is still actually a pretty decent person. He's still reluctant to kill (people other than Strahd) even despite everything. But he's walking a line that gets thinner and thinner by the day, and I'm interested in seeing how far he's pushed by the circumstances of this new setting that has both power and danger to offer.
I'm also very excited to put him in a situation where he no longer has enough resources to survive as a given, and actually has to figure out how to get by day-to-day like someone who isn't rich or well-furnished with adventuring supplies. He worked at a grocery store in one of my tdm threads and he still doesn't know how much a cabbage is supposed to cost. This is his 'not looking at the bill' to 'tallying every item on the list in his head before checkout' arc. What do you MEAN he can't just get more money?
Technology will also be a barrier for him, but I don't think it's SUPER high up on the list, all told.
What's the easiest thing you foresee your character adapting to in the setting?
Probably the idea of not going home? That might change, but at the moment he's already made his peace with the idea of never returning home after everything he's done (mostly to himself), and whether that's from Diadem or Barovia doesn't really make a huge difference to him. While he doesn't really regret what he's done, he still can't bear the idea of showing his face to his family and friends as he is now, or seeing them and not even being able to embrace them.
Otherwise, Adrian is actually surprisingly hardy despite looking like he has the constitution of an orchid. Long, gruelling shifts and even longer travel (on foot) aren't new to him. Though he still lacks self-preservation instincts, he has enough wherewithal to take precautions and makes up for his lack of insight (sometimes) with observational and investigative skills. He's very people-oriented and tends to form bonds quickly and encourage others to do the same, like an outdoor cat that really wants to be brought inside. This will probably get him into a lot of trouble in this setting, but being able to form those bonds will also help him survive and maybe not lose himself completely.

Adrian Silverleaf
Rich noble / former field medic keeps picking up magical sugar daddies and cursed abilities, only sometimes against his will.
history
- grew up as a rich old money noble in the city of Waterdeep
- studied medicine, became a field medic
- forged a pact with a celestial to save the life of a soldier he cared for and became a warlock
- responded to a call for aid from the Lords Alliance at the behest of his patron
- got isekai'd into barovia (dark fantasy vampire land) and had absolutely the worst time a guy could have
appearance
FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Dresses like a prudish rich boy, looks a bit undead. Weird eyes, light-colored freckles.
Adrian is always fully covered from the neck down, including gloves, regardless of the weather. He favours cloaks, suits, and high collars if he can find them but will prioritize wearing anything that covers the maximum amount of skin. Usually very neatly kept to the point of being a bit fussy. He tends to fade into the background whenever he can and generally doesn't want to be perceived.Adrian's body language tends to be a bit stiff and withdrawn at first blush. He's polite but distant, and very guarded about extremes of emotion. He always keeps at least a few feet of physical distance between himself and others unless he's examining them. There's an odd pallor to his skin that makes him look kinda corpse-y. His skin is pitch black at the edges of his extremities and graduates to the normal brown. One of his eyes is gold, with an enlarged iris and no pupil, and the other is fully black with with visibly dark veins around it.
When casting/using magic or experiencing extremes of emotion, his freckles glow (very much like a flush of embarrassment or anger) and his halo may become visible.
On the off chance that he isn't completely covered, there's a very distinct hand print directly between his collar bones, and a second one just below the nape of his neck. His arms are covered in tattoos nearly to the elbow; his spellbook is inked into his skin.
personality
RUMORS: Seems like a decent guy, but the vibes are a bit unsettling.
Adrian serves as his adventuring party's primary healer, and in some ways he's about what you'd expect: polite, kind, and even-tempered, Adrian is the sort of bleeding heart who warms up to people too easily and feels compelled to help everyone he can. For the most part, he tends to hang back, allowing the more boisterous members of the party to take the lead in social situations. The less comfortable he is, the more professionally he conducts himself, but once he warms to people he has a sharp, wry sense of humor.Despite his gentle temperament, Adrian is far from a pushover. In tense and stressful situations, he's quick to take command if he feels that he's the best equipped to do so. He has no qualms about getting his hands dirty, literally or otherwise.
What's more, anyone who's spent time with him in a less than professional capacity would probably describe Adrian with a string of unrepeatable curses. He is, at his core, absurdly stubborn and often reckless in his convictions. He won't abide the innocent to suffer needlessly, or injustice to continue if he can act. If he believes that his companions won't help him, or that someone will try to stop him, he'll go alone and do what he wants to do the moment their backs are turned. Sometimes this is the right choice, but it can often cause more harm than good. When the creepy children invite you into the Death House, you should probably not go there, even on the off chance that it might be real, you know? But Adrian is already in the front door.
Due to his privileged upbringing, Adrian can sometimes be headstrong, clueless, naive, or even self-riotous, but after his experience in Barovia he has matured somewhat. He has enough self-awareness that this facet of him tends to come out in more subtle ways now, most often in the way he that he views and relates to power.
Adrian is someone who needs to be useful. He's driven by both his genuine care for others and his intense survivors' guilt. He wants to help people to the best of his abilities — it's just that he often finds those abilities coming up short. He's often been forced to make compromises and complex moral choices. There are never enough resources or magical abilities to heal everyone in need. There's never enough strength or sacrifice to subdue all evil. And Adrian, because of his nature and his own substantial guilt, has repeatedly been unwilling and unable to accept that. Whenever power is presented to him, he seizes it with both hands, hoping that it will make him more useful to his companions, or strong enough to save just one more innocent life. Adrian's grasping for power has corrupted his body to a significant degree, but he feels neither self-pity nor remorse. The way he sees things, no personal cost is too great if it means that he can protect those he cares for — whether they want him to or not.
